Mormon crickets

Ever wonder what drives the swarming of Mormon crickets? Did you know that Mormon crickets aren’t really crickets but katydids? I didn’t either (for both questions). (For more on Mormon crickets, click here.) Anyway, apparently these guys get pretty bad salt and protein cravings, and they don’t just get moody—they swarm, and even eat each other. PMS doesn’t seem quite so bad now, does it?

As a matter of fact, I did know that mormon crickets were neither mormons nor crickets, but are a part of the family of long horn grasshoppers(katydids) scientificaly know as the family Tettiongoniidae.

(see I did learn something in my entomology class)

What I want to know is how they convinced all those crickets to get baptized to become Mormon crickets. I can't even get Malcom to go to church on Sundays, let alone get his name on the rolls! He could learn a thing or two from those crickets!

This makes me think of two things: First, I grew up watching Nature on PBS with my dad. I still like any nature show. Eliza will watch them with me - anything to do with animals. She was on a bug kick for awhile, but we unfortunately never saw a show on Mormon Crickets. There was an interesting show on bees, however. The second thing this reminds me of is Coffee Talk with Linda Richmond. "Here's a topic: Mormon Crickets - they're neither Mormons, nor crickets. Discuss . . ."
