Another '80's throwback
Casting Crowns is a Christian rock group that I like. (Thanks Mom H. for getting me the self-titled CD for Christmas--Love it!) One of the songs on this album is a praise song with some lines like “You’re the King of Kings and Lord of Lords” and “We give you glory.” But there’s also this line “You’re the Master of the Universe.” In principle, I certainly don’t disagree, but because of the phrasing of that line, it always distracts my attention from the focus of the song—Christ. Instead, I have visions of He-Man, Skeletor, and She-ra. I suppose it’s better than, “You’re truly, truly, truly outrageous!” or "You’re more than meets the eye” or “You’re a real American hero!”

Sonnet, my husband and I are laughing out loud!
That it a rather distracting line for such a song. But it certainly stirs some great memories! Thanks for the giggle.
When I say "it's better than..." I'm not trying to imply that He-Man is inherently better or more Christ-like than Jem, Transformers, or GI Joe. But the song would be even more funny and distracting to me if the taglines from any of those other shows were used.
By the way, Sonnet, we got to see Casting Crowns in Nov. '04 (on my birthday) with Steven Curtis Chapman and Chris Tomlin. It was a very good show! There was however no reference to Superheroes, unfortunately. And you can go ahead and say it: He-Man IS better. We all know it.
I really like Casting Crowns too. I miss being able to talk Christian Rock with you. Travis is still not converted to the idea. Maybe he has something against mixing super heroes and religion...
Amy-sounds like it was a great show. Sarah-I miss that too. I haven't found anyone here who can talk Christian rock with me or who can introduce me to more groups. Casting Crowns I found by accident when I was in MN. The local rock radio station played Christian rock on Sunday mornings, so one morning on the way to church I heard...
"If we are the body
Why arent His arms reaching
Why arent His hands healing
Why arent His words teaching
And if we are the Body
Why arent His feet going
Why is His love not showing them there is a way"
It struck me. I didn't know who the group was, but I knew I needed to find out.
Do you listen to Chris Rice or Mark Shultz? They are two of my favorites.
Amy--I've heard some Chris Rice, but don't have any myself. Not familiar with Mark Shultz. I'll have to check him out.
