The Southland in the Springtime

This is one thing I like about living in Raleigh—Springtime. And Spring starts so much earlier here than it did in Minnesota. It’s refreshing and invigorating! In Minnesota it was May before it really felt like Spring. But here, it’s early March and the trees and daffodils are in bloom. The days are getting longer, and we’re walking around the lake more than we did two months ago. The Indigo Girls are right—there is something about the Southland in the Springtime.

The flowers I put in before Thanksgiving are finally in their glory. The petunias are lovin' it. They are four times bigger than the starts I planted in November. The pink geraniums are so grand that even the dead blooms still look good. My penstemen have tall spiky stems with small bright magenta blossoms that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. The gold and purple pansies have been blooming all winter in a marathon of color. March is incredible in Arizona. If we get rain during the winter, the desert is velvety green and yellow and blue and organge and pink. We're missing out this spring but last year was lush.
The desert looks pretty blah right now but next week when the tiny white buds on my citrus trees join in the blooming frenzy, my front yard will smell as good as it looks. Spingtime is why people live in Arizona!

I'm turning green with envy right now. Everything is still dead and cold here in CT. But the birds are starting to chirp and it's supposed to be almost sixty degrees this weekend so it's gotta be close. . . it just hast to be!

I want 60 degree weather! Last week we had high 50s, but now it is back to the 30s and 40 with... yes, a chance of snow for tonight and tomorrow! It has been a pretty sunny day today though. But my students also told me that it was snowing during recess, of course not very much. John and I biked down to the lake on Monday and it was so nice. I guess I could still go today, but it is COLD! I should also not complain b/c I'm not in Minnesota!

Those flowers are beautiful. Is that a magnolia? When I see such lush beautly it makes me long to be back in San Diego where it is lush and green year round.

Personally I enjoy winter, it helps me to appreciate summer better. (now that I said that I'll end up going somewhere tropical on my mission...aw shucks

Those flowering trees sure make me long for spring! Caroline's students were right. We got about five inches of snow at my house this morning, and similar amouts up and down the Front. While I too love the spring, it sure is fun to go out and play in the snow, and then warm up with a wonderful cup of hot chocolate with marsmallows!
